FFL: Week 1 Recap
Amber Ekre drew the eighth slot in the Sales draft, the whiplash seat, the one I spent a paragraph pitying in August. The projection board had them thirteenth of sixteen. Week 1: 200.36, the biggest number anyone in this league put up, and the top of the power board. I owe the eighth slot an apology, so here I am putting that in writing.
Sales Division
Four winners in Sales, and the best loser outscored three of them.
amberekre 200.36, The Potassium Powerhouses 181.96. Four starters cleared 30, led by a sixth-round Caleb Williams at 41.26, and it had to be that good, because Michelle Hall’s 181.96 was the third-highest score across the entire league. Kyle Monangai had 26.4 on their bench while Jaylen Waddle had 1.2 in the lineup; that one swap flips the game. Michelle, I’m sorry. This is the heartbreak box score of Week 1, and I hate that it happened to a roster this good.
ThatsMYPurseIDKYou91 174.66, ThatsMyBoyeee 66.86. William St. John got 34.4 from a ninth-round D’Andre Swift and 30.96 from Lamar Jackson, with Trevor Lawrence’s 34.1 still on the bench. Deep roster, early statement. On the other side, Ja’Marr Chase, the third pick of the draft, scored 3.2. Was that on your bingo card for week 1?
Never Gibbs Up 156.46, Taylor Mayed 139.82. JP took Jahmyr Gibbs first overall, renamed the team accordingly, and got 35.6 back. They won by 16.64 and still slid from projected #1 to #5, because Jalen Hurts scored 32.72 on their bench. Josh Cash got 28.9 from a seventh-round David Montgomery. Solid, and 0-1.
Missed it by THAT much 148.7, Mid Atlantic Menace 135.2. The commissioner won a game with a fourteenth-round quarterback (Dak Prescott, 18.4) and will not be taking questions. James St Onge got 30.2 from Jaxon Smith-Njigba and 4.1 from Matthew Stafford, which is the whole story.
Accounting Division
The house team leads the division in scoring, and two of the three humans the projections liked most lost.
GreatLakesBob 154.86, SethMD 145.12. Closest game of the week, and the one that reshuffled the board. Robert Atwood was projected sixteenth. Last. Of everybody. Then a third-round Caleb Williams dropped 41.26 and Bob’s lineup left 0.3 points on the bench. Three tenths. The most efficient lineup anyone set this week came from the team the math wrote off. Seth Dudley had the 1.01 (Gibbs, 35.6) and Ashton Jeanty (34.7) and lost anyway, because Terry McLaurin started at 3.4 while Isaiah Likely (26.8) and Chuba Hubbard (23.7) sat. Nearly 48 points unused in a ten-point game. The roster is fine. The bench is where this one was lost, and I say that with admiration.
SBrooks27 178.76, JFHarmon 157.42. Highest-scoring game in Accounting, and the loser was third highest score in Accounting. Shenika got 34.4 from D’Andre Swift and 32 from Zay Flowers. Jason Harmon got 37.3 from Derrick Henry and 3.2 from Ja’Marr Chase, the fourth overall pick. Two contenders. One ran into a buzzsaw, and the buzzsaw is 1-0.
MHartell 142.56, MarginVictory 124.36. Josh Allen went for 40.66, Chris Olave and Bijan Robinson added 30.2 and 29.3, and the other seven starters combined for 42.4. Rebecca McGown got 28.9 from David Montgomery and still took the L in Accounting’s lowest-scoring game. Three players won this one. I want to see what happens when the supporting cast clocks in.
One week in, the big board has a team nobody manages at #2, the preseason #1 at #5, and the team projected dead last at #6. There is a whole season left to see where things will land. Amber, everyone is watching now. That is the price of 200 points in week 1.
